Declaws can be done starting at 3 months of age or when your cat weighs at least 3 pounds. We only do the front two paws.  The Cat Clinic highly recommends that you try to train your cat or kitten to use a scratching post from an early age to protect your furniture, wood work, and skin.

Also, it is wise to NEVER play with a kitten using your hands or feet. This encourages them to attack and scratch/bite you. It may be cute when they are little, but not so much when they grow up. Always use toys to distract your kitten from using you as a play-thing. If they persist in attacking you, gently pick them up by the loose skin at the base of their skull (called scruffing - like their mama would do) and tell them no. Then you can place them in time-out in a carrier or close them off in a separate room for a few minutes.

If scratching or biting is a problem with your kitten or adult cat, please read this article on Feline Aggression for tips, tricks, and ideas on how to re-direct or stop this behavior.

If you still feel a declaw needs to be done, please call us for an appointment. The cost of a declaw is $204.00 and they spend one night. A special litter must be used in place of their regular litter and we provide that after the surgery. The cost of the litter is included in the surgery price.
